“The main conclusion I’ve reached over the decades is that a music career
is not linear. Rather it is an expanding circle, defined by your community. If
you can figure out what and who your community is, it becomes clearer
what role you play in it, what value you add to it. Music is about
relationships. A community supports its musicians if those musicians help
the community. The gigs come and go, and business models often focus
on superficial metrics (“can’t see the forest for the trees”), rather than the
underlying social purpose of your art.”
